Christian Merkl is Professor of Economics at Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, holding the Chair of Macroeconomics since August 2010. He maintains multiple research affiliations including as a research professor at the Institute for Employment Research, research fellow at IZA & CESifo, and coordinator of the institutional network 'Ensuring Economic and Employment Stability'.
His research focuses on macroeconomics with specialization in monetary and fiscal policy, macroeconomic labor market research, and the intersection of these fields. Previous research topics include labor market effects of fiscal policy and short-time work, labor market dynamics during the Great Recession, and labor market volatility.
Merkl serves as associate editor at the Journal of Labor Market Research since 2024, having previously co-edited the open-access journal Economics from 2015 to 2024. He has presented his work at various universities, central banks including the Federal Reserve and ECB, and international organizations such as the EU Commission, ILO, IMF, and OECD.
His international research experience includes visiting positions at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, International Monetary Fund, National Bureau of Economic Research, University of Melbourne, and the University of Texas at Austin.
Merkl previously served as assistant professor at Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel (2007-2010) and head of the research group 'Monetary Policy' at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, where he also provided policy advice to German federal ministries.
