Volker Clausen

Professor Volker Clausen is a distinguished academic specializing in International Economic Relations at the University of Duisburg-Essen's Faculty of Business and Economics. Holding a full professorship since 2001 (initially at University of Essen, then at University of Duisburg-Essen since 2003), he has established himself as an expert in monetary economics within open economies and European integration.

His educational background includes a Diploma in Economics (1987) and Master of Science in Economics (1988) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, followed by a Dr. sc. pol. (1992) and Dr. habil. sc. pol. (1999) from the University of Kiel. His professional journey began as a Research Assistant at the University of Kiel (1988-1999), included a position as Acting Chair at the University of Bonn (2000), and a Visiting Assistant Professorship at Indiana University (2000-2001).

Professor Clausen's research primarily focuses on international economic relations with special emphasis on monetary macroeconomics of open economies, econometric models of the monetary sector, and international financial markets. His work consistently addresses the complexities of asymmetric monetary transmission within the European Monetary Union, oil price dynamics, economic policy uncertainty, and the economic implications of political decisions like Brexit. His research often employs sophisticated modeling techniques including Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) frameworks to analyze policy impacts.

Throughout his career, Professor Clausen has held numerous significant academic leadership positions including Dean of the Faculty of Economics (2012-2016), Vice Dean of the Faculty of Business and Economics (2016-2020), and currently serves as Vice Dean for Research (2023-2024). He chairs the University Commission for Development Planning and Finance since November 2022 and is actively involved in the Committee for International Economic Theory and Policy of Verein für Socialpolitik, having served as its chair from 2011-2015.

His research has been presented at numerous international conferences and institutions including MIT, Johns Hopkins University, and Georgetown University. He has conducted research stays at prestigious institutions such as the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, Deutsche Bundesbank, and the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies.
