Professor Vladimir Falko is a Professor of Theoretical Physics and Director of the National Graphene Institute (NGI) at The University of Manchester. He leads research on two-dimensional materials and their heterostructures, focusing on electronic, optical, and quantum properties. Falko co-directs the Graphene NOWNANO Centre for Doctoral Training and has spearheaded the European Graphene Flagship’s Fundamental Science work package. His contributions include pioneering studies on bilayer graphene and organizing the Graphene Week conference series.
Research interests span graphene, 2D materials, heterostructures, quantum Hall effects, nanoelectronics, spintronics, and quantum optics. He advocates for translational research, bridging fundamental science with industrial applications through the NGI platform.
Notable projects include the EU-funded Graphene Flagship (2016–2018), advancing graphene oxide biodegradation and two-dimensional material technologies. Falko’s work emphasizes accelerating innovation pathways from theoretical concepts to real-world technologies in high-tech industries.
Collaboration networks span global institutions, focusing on computational materials science and experimental quantum phenomena. The NGI facility under his academic leadership provides cutting-edge infrastructure for 2D material research.
