PD Dr. Vivianne Irene Otto is a Senior Lecturer (60% part-time) and Senior Scientist at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, ETH Zurich, within the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences. She also holds a lectureship in the MSc course 'Glycosylation' at the University of Zurich. Her research focuses on endothelial cell glycobiology, particularly the roles of glycans in cell-cell interactions and their implications in drug development. Otto has held diverse academic roles including federal pharmacy exam coordination and editorial work in scientific communication.
Education:
- PhD in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (1997, ETH Zurich)
- Habilitation in Pharmaceutical Biochemistry (2006, ETH Zurich)
- Advanced Studies in Science Journalism (2008-2009, maz School)
Research Interests:
Investigating endothelial cell glycomes, glycan roles in vascular biology, and translational applications in drug development. Current work emphasizes sialic acid's functional roles in lymphatic endothelial interactions and tumor vascular biology.
Publications:
Her work spans glycobiology fundamentals to translational cancer research, with recent focus on tumor vascular markers and lymphatic signaling mechanisms. Over 30 peer-reviewed articles highlight her expertise in glycoprotein structure-function relationships and vascular biomarkers.
Teaching & Academic Service:
- Course leader for 'Glycobiology in Drug Development' and 'Pathobiology'
- Member of curriculum revision committees for MSc Pharmacy programs
- Editorial contributions to scientific communication initiatives
Labs/Teams:
Affiliated with the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences' glycobiology research group and collaborates with oncology teams studying tumor vasculature.
