Vivian L. Gadsden is the William T. Carter Professor of Child Development and Education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE), where she also serves as Co-Faculty Director of the Penn Early Childhood and Family Research Center. Her career spans teaching, research, and leadership roles, including former positions as Chair of the Education Graduate Group (1996–2004) and Chair of the Penn Faculty Senate (2022–2023). She has collaborated across disciplines and institutions to address systemic inequities in education and health.
Dr. Gadsden’s research focuses on intergenerational learning, family cultures, and early childhood development, particularly in marginalized communities. Her work examines how political, cultural, and social histories shape family identities and educational outcomes, with emphasis on urban father engagement, children of incarcerated parents, and literacy among African American and Latino youth. She advocates for policies that promote equity and community-driven change through initiatives like the Youth Civic Engagement Research (YCER) project.
She has held leadership roles in national organizations, including serving as President of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and on boards such as the Spencer Foundation, Buffett Institute, and Philadelphia Mayor’s Commission on Literacy. Her contributions were recognized with election to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2023 and multiple fellowships. She also co-edits the Review of Research in Education (2023 and 2025) and chairs editorial boards for Literacy Research: Theory, Method, and Practice.
In grants and collaborations, Dr. Gadsden has led projects funded by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, Ford Foundation, Mott Foundation, Spencer Foundation, and NIH. She works across Penn’s schools to study health and educational disparities. Her research and advocacy highlight the intersection of family dynamics, literacy, and systemic inequities, aiming to empower communities through evidence-based interventions.
Dr. Gadsden’s affiliations include Penn GSE and cross-disciplinary teams like the Penn Futures Project. Her future work focuses on expanding her conceptual frameworks to address emerging challenges in early childhood education and family well-being.
