Vivian Gadsden

Vivian Gadsden is the William T. Carter Professor in Child Development and Education at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and School of Arts & Sciences. She directs the National Center on Fathers and Families and serves as Associate Director of the National Center on Adult Literacy. Her research focuses on cultural and social factors affecting learning and literacy across the life course, intergenerational learning within families, and equity in marginalized communities. She has led interdisciplinary initiatives such as the National Academies’ Parenting Matters report and the Youth Civic Engagement Research (YCER) project.

• Education Background: Taught developmental English and educational psychology at Oakland and Wayne State Universities; research analyst at Policy Studies Associates (Washington, D.C.).
• Leadership Roles: Former Chair of the Education Graduate Group (1996–2004), Chair of the University Faculty Senate (2022–2023), and Vice Chair of the Foundation for Child Development Board.

Her work bridges family dynamics, early childhood development, and policy, with a focus on racialized identities and social justice. She has held editorial leadership roles in Review of Research in Education and Educational Researcher, and has received prestigious fellowships and academic honors, including election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2023).

• Grants & Collaborations: Principal investigator on grants from the Annie E. Casey, Ford, Mott, and Spencer Foundations, as well as NIH and NICHD. Collaborates across Penn Schools on health and educational disparities.

Dr. Gadsden’s legacy includes pioneering frameworks like family cultures—linking families’ political, cultural, and social histories to educational outcomes—and advocating for systemic change through community-engaged research.
