Professor Vivek Shandas is a faculty member at Portland State University with appointments in the Nohad A. Toulan School of Urban Studies and Planning (College of Urban and Public Affairs) and the Department of Geography (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences). He is the Founder and Director of the Sustaining Urban Places Research (SUPR) Lab, a collaborative research space fostering interdisciplinary inquiry and community engagement.
- PhD, University of Washington, Seattle
Dr. Shandas specializes in urban climate resilience, focusing on the intersection of climate change, urban development, and environmental justice. His research explores urban ecosystem services, air and water quality, urban heat islands, and participatory planning. He employs transdisciplinary methods, integrating geographic information systems (GIS), community-based research, and policy analysis to address real-world urban environmental challenges. His theoretical framework views cities as socially constructed experiments with varying adaptive capacities.
The recent publications from Dr. Shandas reflect a strong trend in urban sustainability science, combining spatial analysis with social and environmental data. His work spans climate change impacts on water use, urban heat, air pollution, and community engagement in environmental stewardship. The research is inherently interdisciplinary, bridging urban planning, ecology, public health, and governance.
- Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) Fellowship, National Science Foundation
Dr. Shandas has been a principal investigator on multiple externally funded research projects, including the NSF-sponsored Urban Resilience to Climate Extremes (UREx) project, the Canopy Continuum project with the U.S. Forest Service, and projects funded by NOAA and the City of Portland. He has mentored numerous PhD students, particularly through the Ecosystem Services for Urbanizing Regions (ESUR) IGERT program, which trained over 35 PhD students. His collaborative research involves partnerships with federal agencies, state and local governments, NGOs, and international institutions.
Dr. Shandas leads the Sustaining Urban Places Research (SUPR) Lab, located in the Urban Center at PSU. The lab serves as a decision support center for collaborative research on urban sustainability, bringing together faculty, graduate students, community members, and decision-makers. The SUPR Lab supports externally funded projects and fosters interdisciplinary research on topics like urban heat, ecosystem services, and community engagement.
