Vito Matranga

Vito Matranga is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychological, Pedagogical, Physical Exercise and Training Sciences at the University of Palermo. He teaches courses including Italian Dialectology, Linguistics, and Italian Linguistics and Dialectology for the Cultural Heritage and Primary Education Sciences programs. His office is located in building 15, studio 5.15, where he holds office hours on Mondays from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and Wednesdays from 12:30 to 15:30.

Professor Matranga's research focuses on linguistic geography, dialectology, and sociolinguistics with particular emphasis on Sicilian dialects and Italo-Albanian linguistic varieties. His work explores linguistic variation and change in Sicily, dialect culture between conservation and innovation, language-dialect contact phenomena, and linguistic minorities, especially Italo-Albanian varieties. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of Sicilian dialect geography, phonetics, and lexicography.

His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on computational approaches to geolinguistic research, Sicilian dialect documentation, Italo-Albanian linguistic relations, and the documentation of traditional vocabulary related to food culture and rural life. Professor Matranga has been instrumental in the Linguistic Atlas of Sicily project and maintains the Archive of Sicilian Dialects.

Professor Matranga leads the Linguistic Geography Laboratory and the Archive of Sicilian Dialects, which include specialized computer workstations, dedicated software, recording equipment, and extensive digital archives for dialect documentation and analysis. He has collaborated on major projects including the Mediterranean Linguistic Atlas, BookAlive, and various research initiatives focused on Sicilian linguistic identity and cultural heritage.
