Iride Valenti is an Associate Professor of Glottology and Linguistics at the Department of Humanities, University of Catania, where she also holds national qualification as a full professor in the L-LIN/01 sector. She is actively engaged in teaching, research, and public outreach, with a focus on historical linguistics, etymology, language contact, and Sicilian dialectology.
Her research interests include:
- Historical linguistics and etymology, particularly Gallicisms in Sicilian
- Language contact and interference in medieval and modern contexts
- Italian emigration linguistics, especially in Tunisia
- Literary language and dialect interference (e.g., Pirandello, Camilleri, Pendola)
- 16th–18th century Sicilian lexicography (Scobar, Del Bono)
- Oral toponymy and digital lexicography
Her recent monograph, Vocabolario storico-etimologico dei gallicismi nel siciliano (2022), represents a landmark contribution to the field, offering the first comprehensive etymological dictionary of Gallicisms in Sicilian. Her publications span journals like 'Studi Emigrazione' and lexicographical studies on Renaissance Sicilian. She leads significant research projects, including PRIN 2022 and PNRR Spoke 3, focusing on oral toponymy and digital archives of Italian multilingualism.
She has received recognition through:

Valenti supervises numerous theses on topics ranging from linguistic conflict to toponymy and language teaching. She leads research units in major national projects and is Vice-President of the 'PROGETTO GALLOITALICI' association for the preservation of Gallo-Italic dialects in Sicily. She is also involved in educational outreach, including the Mat-Ita project for secondary schools.
