معرفی
Virginie Duvat is a Professor of Geography at La Rochelle University and holds a prestigious Senior Innovation Chair at the University Institute of France (2023-2028). She serves as a Lead Author for the Small Islands Chapter of the IPCC Working Group II (Impacts, Vulnerability and Adaptation) for both the 5th and 6th Assessment Reports. Her research focuses on coastal environmental changes, vulnerability trajectories, coastal risk reduction, and climate change adaptation in small tropical islands.
Professor Duvat's research interests encompass:
- Coastal environmental changes in tropical island contexts
- Vulnerability trajectories of coastal communities and ecosystems
- Nature-based solutions for coastal risk reduction and adaptation
- Climate change adaptation strategies for small island developing states
- Atoll island dynamics under sea-level rise and changing climate conditions
- Integration of scientific knowledge into climate policy and adaptation planning
Her recent publications reveal a strong emphasis on practical climate adaptation in island contexts, with particular focus on nature-based solutions, coastal defense systems, and vulnerability assessments. Duvat's work consistently employs transdisciplinary approaches that bridge physical geography, social sciences, and policy analysis to address complex climate challenges facing island communities.
She has coordinated several major research initiatives including:
- The transdisciplinary PPR Ocean Solutions FUTURISKS project on "Past and future coastal risks in French tropical island overseas territories: from impacts to solutions" (2022-2028)
- The Fondation de France ADAPTOM project on "Feedback on the potential of nature-based solutions to reduce coastal risks and promote ADAPTation to climate change in French island Overseas Territories" (2023-2025)
- The transdisciplinary project ADAPTNAT (French Development Agency) on "Evaluation of nature-based coastal adaptation projects to climate change in the tropical islands of the southwest Indian Ocean" (2023-2026)
Professor Duvat holds significant scientific leadership positions:
- Member of the International Advisory Board of Wiley Interdisciplinary Reviews: Climate Change
- Editor of the journal Cambridge Prisms: Coastal Futures
- Co-leader of the Atolls Futures initiative, which brings together 12 international specialists to discuss the future of atolls in the context of climate change
- Member of the IUCN Overseas Scientific Committee
- Member of the scientific committee of the Conservatoire du Littoral
- Member of the scientific committee Déclic of the daily Sud-Ouest
Her research has direct policy implications for small island nations facing climate change impacts, and she actively collaborates with international organizations and researchers across multiple disciplines to develop practical solutions for coastal climate risks. Professor Duvat's work demonstrates a strong commitment to translating scientific knowledge into actionable adaptation strategies for vulnerable island communities.
