Virginia Mantouvalou is a Professor of Human Rights and Labour Law at the Faculty of Laws, University College London (UCL). She holds a PhD in Law and LLM in Human Rights from the London School of Economics (LSE), along with an LLB from the University of Athens. Her research focuses on structural injustice, workers' rights, migration, and the intersection of law with sociology and political science. She has authored and co-edited influential books, including Structural Injustice and Workers’ Rights (2023) and Human Rights at Work (2024). Her work has been cited by courts such as the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
Virginia has received prestigious awards, including a British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship and an AHRC grant. She is actively engaged in public policy through roles such as Chair of the NGO Kalayaan, advocating for migrant domestic workers' rights. She has held visiting positions at Georgetown University and the Université Libre de Bruxelles, and has advised the UK Joint Committee on Human Rights and the Council of Europe.
Her research and publications address themes like decent work (SDG 8), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), and peace/justice institutions (SDG 16). She serves as Co-Editor of the Modern Law Review and on editorial boards of journals like Stanford Studies in Human Rights. Her recent work includes a special issue on 'Work in Prison and Immigration Detention' for the European Labour Law Journal (2024).
