Prof. Mijke Houwerzijl is a Full Professor of Labour Law at Tilburg University (since 2011) and previously held a chair in Comparative and European Labour Law at the University of Groningen (2010–2021). She specializes in Dutch and EU labour law, with a focus on cross-border labour mobility, social security law, and enforcement mechanisms. She earned her doctorate from Tilburg University in 2005, examining the Posting of Workers Directive. She is a member of the editorial board of TRA: Tijdschrift Recht & Arbeid and chairs the Dutch branch of the International Society for Labour and Social Security Law (ISLSSL).
Her research explores EU labour directives, temporary agency workers, minimum wage policies, and posted workers' rights. She has led projects like the WorkYP H2020 initiative on in-work poverty and the SENSE project addressing truck drivers' legal status. She advises the Dutch government on social impact strategies and contributes to EU policy consultations. Her work aligns with UN SDGs 8 (Decent Work) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).
Recent publications include analyses of cross-border agency workers' conditions, EU minimum wage directive interpretations, and transnational labour mobility challenges. She actively participates in academic conferences, policy reviews, and legal advisory roles, emphasizing social equity in globalized labour markets.
