Virginia Heath is a Professor of Film at Sheffield Hallam University, affiliated with the Department of Media Arts and Communication and the Art Design and Media Research Centre. She specializes in films exploring female sexuality, gender, identity, and marginalized voices, blending documentary and narrative forms. Her internationally acclaimed works include BAFTA-nominated From Scotland With Love and Berlinale-winning Relativity. She teaches on the MA Filmmaking course and supervises doctoral research on mental health representation in documentary.
Her research is funded by Screen Scotland, BFI, BBC, and HERA, with collaborative projects involving institutions like City University New York. Current projects include the Mae West documentary exploring queer and African-American cultural empathy. Awards include BAFTA nominations, CPH Best Drama Short, and Underwire Best Sound Design. She serves on the Film Education Journal editorial board and advocates for women in film through organizations like Women in Film and Television.
