Virginia Bolshakova is an Assistant Research Professor in Purdue University's Department of Curriculum and Instruction and serves as Executive Director of Indiana GEAR UP and Director of Out-of-School Programs. Her interdisciplinary work integrates agroecology and science education to address food systems, natural resource management, and STEM pedagogy for diverse learners.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Biology and Insect Ecology from Utah State University (2013)
- M.Ed. in Science Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Toledo (2007)
- B.S. in Biology & Biology Teaching Composite with Psychology minor from State University of New York and Utah State University (2005)
Bolshakova's research examines coupled human-natural systems through quantitative and qualitative lenses, prioritizing societal resilience and cross-disciplinary thinking. She focuses on urban STEM education, youth development, and environmental programs like urban beekeeping and garden-based learning, with strong emphasis on equity for Latino ELL students, students with disabilities, and underserved communities.
Her 15 most recent publications (2016-2024) reveal evolving trends: early work centered on entomology and sagebrush ecosystems, while current research emphasizes meta-analyses of inclusive education, college readiness via GEAR UP, and program evaluations of Teens-as-Teachers models. Key themes include self-efficacy development, culturally responsive pedagogy, and community partnerships for STEM engagement.
Scientific recognition includes:
- NSF CREDITS Team Science Fellow (2016)
- International Congress of Dietetics Top Abstract Award (2016)
- USU Dissertation Fellowship (2013)
- Conservation Biology Student Award (2012)
As Indiana GEAR UP Director, she oversees federally funded initiatives expanding college access for low-income students, designing programs like 'Teens-as-Teachers' that mentor youth in nutrition science and community leadership. Her grant portfolio spans NSF, USDA, and state education departments, focusing on urban STEM equity and environmental literacy. Current projects integrate classroom greenhouses and urban agriculture into K-12 curricula.
She leads Purdue's Out-of-School Programs unit, coordinating community partnerships for STEM camps and the Indiana GEAR UP consortium involving 12 school districts. Her teams collaborate with Extension services, UC Agriculture, and national organizations like the National 4-H Council to scale evidence-based youth development models.
