Carla C. Johnson

Carla C. Johnson is a Professor of Science Education and Executive Director of the Artificial Intelligence Academy at North Carolina State University (NC State). She holds a dual role as Faculty Research Fellow and leads initiatives to advance STEM education equity and innovation. Dr. Johnson has secured over $75 million in external funding for STEM programs, with a focus on making STEM accessible to all students. Her leadership includes roles as Chair of the American Educational Research Association’s (AERA) Special Interest Group for Science Teaching and Learning and Editor of the School Science and Mathematics journal (2011–2021). She has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles, 33 books, and 9 book chapters, including the influential Handbook of Research on STEM Education (2020).

Dr. Johnson’s research emphasizes K-12 STEM curriculum development, teacher training, and policy advocacy. Notable projects include the STEM Road Map Curriculum Series and leadership of the Indiana GEAR UP program, which improved post-secondary readiness for urban students. She collaborates with industry partners through the AI Academy’s network of over 100 organizations to expand access to AI/IT education for historically excluded groups.

Her honors include the 2023 NC State Alumni Association Extension Award, 2017 Purdue Excellence in Research Award, and multiple Golden Apple Awards for teaching excellence. Johnson previously served as Purdue’s Associate Dean for Research and led strategic partnerships for the Indiana College of Education. She holds leadership roles in national STEM policy initiatives, advocating for equity and innovation in education systems.

Dr. Johnson’s work bridges academia, policy, and industry to transform STEM education through interdisciplinary approaches, equitable access strategies, and evidence-based practices. Her current focus includes AI apprenticeship programs, online learning effectiveness, and global STEM literacy frameworks.
