Dr. Vinod Balasubramaniam is an Associate Professor at the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Monash University Malaysia. He holds a Biotechnology degree from Asian Institute of Medicine, Science and Technology (AIMST) and a PhD from Monash University Malaysia under Prof. Sharifah Syed Hassan. His postdoctoral research at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York focused on influenza virus-host interactions. His research expertise includes viral pathogenesis, host-virus protein interactions, and antiviral strategies using advanced molecular techniques like yeast two-hybrid systems and CRISPR.
Research Interests: Host cellular machinery in viral infections, protein-protein interactions of influenza and flaviviruses, innate immunity mechanisms, and development of therapeutic targets. Key projects involve Enterovirus D68 neuropathogenesis, Zika virus immune evasion, and gut microbiome interactions with viral infections.
Awards include the Unite Health COVID19 Influencers Award (2023) and recognition for innovative immunology teaching approaches. He leads research projects on viral interactomics and therapeutic development, collaborating with institutions globally. Teaching roles include CRISPR techniques in microbiology and mentoring in the Young Scholars Program.
Recent publications focus on SARS-CoV-2-gut-brain axis interactions, dengue virus-microRNA dynamics, and universal influenza vaccine strategies. His work bridges molecular virology with clinical applications, addressing global health challenges through interdisciplinary approaches.
