Vinit Parmar serves as an Associate Professor in the Film Department within the School of Visual, Media and Performing Arts at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. With a background in law, he transitioned to film production and academic work, bringing a unique perspective to documentary filmmaking and film education.
Dr. Parmar earned his Juris Doctor from New York Law School in 1994 and was admitted to the New York State Bar in 1995. His academic journey shifted from legal practice to filmmaking, where he initially worked as a sound mixer before developing his directorial voice and joining the academic ranks.
His research interests center on documentary portrayals of challenged and underrepresented communities, with particular focus on how development and technology impact the environment and society within Asian/Asian American contexts. His work often explores themes of migration, refugee experiences, environmental sustainability, and social justice issues affecting marginalized populations.
Dr. Parmar's filmography reveals consistent engagement with social justice themes across diverse geographical contexts. His recent works examine refugee experiences in Germany, the impacts of China's One-Child Policy, and environmental challenges in India.
