Vincent Salyers serves as Dean of the Joyce E. Lillis School of Nursing at Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa, leading nursing education programs since joining the institution in 2025. His academic leadership spans curriculum development, international initiatives, and advocacy for vulnerable populations across five countries.
His educational credentials include:
- EdD in Teaching & Learning, University of San Francisco (2001)
- MSN in Staff Development & Patient Education, San Francisco State University (1993)
- BA in Psychology, San Francisco State University (1990)
Salyers' research integrates technology with nursing pedagogy, focusing on interprofessional education and clinical practice innovations. His international work in Mexico, Ethiopia, Canada, and the Dominican Republic emphasizes culturally responsive education for ethnically diverse communities and vulnerable populations, driving systemic improvements in nursing and midwifery programs globally.
Analysis of his 2015-2025 publications reveals three dominant trajectories: geriatric nursing education through student/faculty perspectives on aging; visual learning methodologies for pathophysiology instruction; and health literacy frameworks in immigrant communities. These threads converge in his leadership of the National Academies of Practice Health Literacy Position Statement (2025), demonstrating applied scholarship influencing policy.
His scholarly recognition includes:
- Distinguished Fellow, National Academies of Practice (Nursing) (2025–present)
- Fellow, American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) (2019–present)
- Fellow, Academy of Nursing Education (ANEF) (2014–present)
Salyers actively mentors faculty through international program development, evidenced by his co-authored work on mentorship structures for global education initiatives. His grant-funded research supports cross-border nursing education partnerships, with recent projects evaluating peritoneal dialysis care models and Somali immigrant health literacy. As PI/Co-PI on multiple international studies, he prioritizes sustainable capacity-building in resource-limited settings.
He coordinates multinational research teams across North America and Africa, focusing on nursing education reform and health equity. Current collaborations include the Alberta Health Services Connect Care Advisory Committee (2019) and National Academies of Practice working groups, driving interdisciplinary approaches to healthcare system improvement through education-focused innovation.
