Lucy Salyer is a Professor of History and affiliated with the Justice Studies program at the University of New Hampshire's College of Liberal Arts (COLA). Her research focuses on American legal history, with special attention to the Progressive Era, race, ethnicity, and immigration. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Law and Legal Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and a B.A. in History from UC San Diego.
Her work explores topics such as citizenship crises sparked by transnational movements, the intersection of race and military service in citizenship policy, and the legal frameworks shaping immigration law. Notable publications include Under the Starry Flag (2018) and Laws Harsh As Tigers (2000), which analyze citizenship debates and Chinese immigration policies, respectively.
Her teaching spans courses like 'Law in American Life' and 'Special Topics in American Legal History,' reflecting her expertise in legal and social reform dynamics. Salyer’s research emphasizes how legal systems interact with societal changes, particularly in marginalized communities.
