Dr Vikki Carolan is a Principal Lecturer and Undergraduate Delivery Manager in the Department of Biosciences and Chemistry at Sheffield Hallam University. She has been with the university since 1995, following a BSc (Hons) and PhD in Chemistry from UMIST (now part of the University of Manchester). Her roles include overseeing undergraduate program delivery and promoting student employability. She teaches analytical science, with a focus on separation science and surface analysis at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Her research focuses on applying chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques to real-world challenges, such as occupational exposure monitoring for toxic metals like arsenic and chromium. Collaborations include work with the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) to develop novel sampling methodologies. She is also actively involved in promoting chemistry through her role as a committee member of the Royal Society of Chemistry Sheffield and District local section since 1997.
- Education:
- BSc (Hons) Chemistry (Analytical Chemistry), UMIST
- PhD in Chemistry (Surface Analysis), UMIST
- Awards:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- Chartered Chemist (CChem)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC)
Her teaching emphasizes employability skills through modules designed to prepare science graduates for professional careers. She has supervised multiple postgraduate research projects, including studies on occupational exposure to toxic metals and analytical method development. Her work bridges academia and industry, with a focus on practical applications of analytical techniques.
As part of the Bioanalytical Science group within the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre, her research contributes to advancing methodologies for environmental and occupational health monitoring. She remains committed to fostering professional development and community engagement in the chemical sciences.
