Viggo Haraldson Hansteen is a Professor at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo, specializing in Solar Physics and Numerical Simulations of solar atmospheric processes. He leads the Rosseland Centre for Solar Physics and serves as Chair of the Kavli Prize Committee in Astrophysics. His work bridges observational data from telescopes like Swedish 1-m Solar Telescope, Hinode/EIS, and SDO with advanced computational models.
- Academic Rank: Professor
- Affiliations: University of Oslo, Bay Area Environmental Research Institute, National Center for Atmospheric Research, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan
Research Focus lies in solar chromosphere and corona dynamics, particularly magnetic reconnection, current braiding, and nanoflare heating. His team uses Bifrost code simulations to study processes from photosphere to corona, emphasizing multifluid interactions and non-equilibrium ionization.
Recent Publications (2025–2020) highlight advancements in understanding coronal energy release, chromospheric heating, and heliospheric composition through collaborative projects like MUSE and European Solar Telescope. His work frequently appears in top journals such as Nature Astronomy and Astrophysical Journal.
- Scientific Award: Arctowski Medal, US National Academy of Sciences (2017)
