Victor Perez is an Associate Professor of Sociology & Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware, affiliated with the College of Arts & Sciences. He holds joint appointments at the Disaster Research Center and Delaware Environmental Institute (DENIN). His research focuses on environmental justice, health inequities, and risk perception, particularly in urban settings like South Wilmington. He has taught at UD for 20 years, developing courses such as 'Sociology of Diagnosis' and 'Environment and Health,' and created an Honors College course on medicalization. His work integrates quantitative and mixed-methods approaches, emphasizing social justice frameworks.
Education: Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from University of Delaware (Newark, DE), B.S. in Sociology from Towson University (Towson, MD).
Research Interests: Environmental gentrification, climate justice, public health advocacy, and the social construction of health diagnoses. Current projects examine green infrastructure impacts in Delaware and media communication around health risks.
Grants & Service: Recipient of NOAA-funded Delaware Sea Grant grants. Served on UD’s Institutional Review Board, University Faculty Senate, and contributed to national organizations like the American Sociological Association’s Taskforce on Contingent Faculty.
Labs/Teams: Core faculty at the Disaster Research Center and Policy Fellow at the Center for Critical Race & Social Justice (CCRS). Affiliated with DENIN for interdisciplinary environmental research.
