Maggie Nelan is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas (UNT) in the Department of Emergency Management and Disaster Science. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Delaware (2016), an MA in Sociology from the University of Texas at El Paso (2011), and a BA in English with a minor in Religious Studies from UTEP (2005). Her research focuses on disaster sociology, including convergence in disasters, donation supply chain dynamics, and social vulnerability. She has conducted fieldwork following Hurricane Sandy (2012) and the 2013 Oklahoma tornadoes. Her work explores volunteer behavior, organizational framing of disaster needs, and household resilience in crises.
Research highlights include her dissertation on material and monetary donation supply chains post-disaster, and her MA thesis analyzing health and risk behaviors of disaster volunteers in Haiti. She has published in International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters and co-authored chapters in disaster studies anthologies. Nelan has taught at the University of Delaware as a teaching fellow and taught undergraduate courses independently. Her current goals include tenure-track advancement in teaching and research.
Professional experience includes roles as a Research Assistant at the Disaster Research Center and Teaching Assistant in Sociology and Criminal Justice at UD. She remains affiliated with UTEP’s Sociology and Anthropology program, where her MA thesis was advised by Dr. Sara Grineski.
