Dr Vicky Kasprowicz is a Research Fellow in Energy Demand at the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU) within the University of Sussex Business School, where she contributes to the Energy Demand Research Centre. Her work focuses on the intersection of energy access and gender equality, particularly in off-grid electrification contexts across Latin America and the Global South.
Her educational background includes:
- ESRC-funded interdisciplinary PhD from the Science Policy Research Unit (SPRU), University of Sussex
- MSc in Development Management from the Open University
- BSc in Psychology from the University of Southampton
Dr Kasprowicz's research centers on energy demand, energy inequities, and the gender-energy nexus, investigating how appliance use and daily practices influence gender relations in communities gaining modern energy access. Her work bridges Sustainable Development Goals 5 (gender equality) and 7 (energy access) through field studies in Guatemala, Colombia, and Kenya.
Her recent publications analyze place-based energy demand frameworks, gendered impacts of electrification, and pay-as-you-go solar business models. These studies reveal critical socio-technical dimensions of energy transitions, emphasizing context-specific policy interventions and gender-sensitive approaches to energy infrastructure.
She secured Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funding for her project on prepaid solar electrification and gender relations in rural off-grid communities (2017-2023). In teaching, she supervises MSc dissertations and delivers seminars on gender and energy access within Sustainable Development and Climate Policy modules at the University of Sussex.
