Professor Vicky Cowling is a Senior Group Leader at the Cancer Research UK Scotland Institute and Chair of Biology at the University of Glasgow. She investigates the molecular mechanisms of RNA cap regulation in health and disease, focusing on its role during cellular transitions like oncogene deregulation, stem cell differentiation, and T cell activation.
Her research examines how RNA capping enzymes influence gene expression through biochemical complex characterization and translational control studies. She collaborates with Cancer Research Horizons and the Dundee Drug Discovery Unit to translate findings into therapeutic approaches. Her lab includes associate scientist Alison Galloway and postdoctoral researchers studying RNA regulation in neurons, immune cells, and glioblastoma.
Recent publications highlight her work on:
- RNA cap methyltransferase inhibition for antiviral therapies
- Phosphorylation-driven CMTR1 activation in influenza infection
- Coordination of RNMT/CMTR1 in neural differentiation
- Cap regulation in T cell activation and cancer immunity
- RNA processing in stem cell pluripotency
Her scientific awards include:
- Wellcome Trust Investigator Award (2020)
- Royal Society of Edinburgh Fellowship (2019)
- EMBO Young Investigator (2014)
- MRC Senior Fellowship (2013)
She serves on committees for the British Society for Cell Biology, Wellcome Trust, and Volkswagen Foundation, guiding research strategy and funding decisions.
