Vicki Balfour

Dr. Vicki Balfour is a Research Fellow in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. Her research focuses on evolutionary biology and ecology, particularly in the context of sexual selection and reproductive strategies in seed bugs (Lygaeus simulans). Her work explores topics such as mating failure mechanisms, cryptic male choice, sperm competition, and hybridization between insect species. She has contributed to understanding the genetic and ecological factors influencing reproductive isolation and life history trade-offs.

Dr. Balfour completed her doctoral research under the supervision of Prof. David Shuker, investigating the causes of mating failure in Lygaeus simulans. Her studies integrate behavioral observations, genetic analyses, and ecological experiments to address fundamental questions in evolutionary biology. She has published extensively in journals such as Ecology and Evolution, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, and Current Biology, with a focus on insect reproductive ecology and evolutionary genetics.
