Verónica Castillo-Muñoz is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She holds a PhD from the University of California, Irvine. Her research focuses on Mexican history, Chicanx studies, and transnational border dynamics, with a particular emphasis on gender, migration, and the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Her landmark book, *The Other California: Land Identity and Politics on the Mexican Borderlands* (2016), examines how labor migration and land reforms shaped Baja California's social landscape. Current projects include a study of women's experiences during the Mexican Revolution (1910–1920).
Castillo-Muñoz has been awarded prestigious grants including the Fulbright Garcia-Robles Fellowship and NEH Huntington Library Fellowship. She co-curated the binational exhibit *“Se Busca a Pancho Villa”* and serves as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians. Her work bridges academic and public history, addressing themes such as refugee narratives and mixed-race families in border regions.
Key contributions include analyzing photographic depictions of Mexican refugees in early 20th-century U.S. media and exploring how gender dynamics influenced borderland communities during periods of conflict. She teaches courses on Chicano history, U.S.-Mexican relations, and borderlands studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding migration and identity.
