Veronika Fikfak is a Professor of Human Rights and International Law at University College London’s School of Public Policy, and co-Director of the UCL Institute for Human Rights. She leads the ERC-funded project Human Rights Nudge, examining state responses to European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgments. Her research bridges quantitative and qualitative methods, focusing on reparations, compliance mechanisms, and behavioral economics in law. She serves as Secretary General of the European Society of International Law, managing editor of the American Journal of International Law Unbound, and judge ad hoc at the ECtHR.
Her work explores structural remedies in human rights law, the role of language in judicial persuasion, and sanctions as state-behavior modifiers. Funded by prestigious grants including the European Research Council and the British Academy, her research emphasizes systemic legal design and cross-disciplinary approaches. Upcoming projects include studies on climate justice barriers for children and access to international human rights justice.
Key contributions include critiques of ECtHR settlement practices, analyses of state compliance patterns, and theoretical frameworks on behavioral compliance in international law. Her scholarship spans constitutional law, war powers, and the interplay between domestic and international legal systems.
