Severine Vermeire is a Full Professor of Medicine at KU Leuven and Research Coordinator of the Group for Biomedical Sciences (2021-present). She serves as Head of the IBD Leuven clinical & research unit (2013-present) and holds a Full-time Staff Position in Gastroenterology at University Hospital Leuven (2003-present). Her academic career includes roles as Chair of the Department of Chronic Diseases & Metabolism (2016-2021), Associate Professor (2009-2016), and Assistant Professor (2005-2009) at KU Leuven.

- Trained at Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics (Oxford, 1997-1998) and Montreal General Hospital (McGill University, 2000-2001)
Her research focuses on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, with expertise in microbiome analysis, genetic susceptibility, and multi-omics approaches. She investigates prognostic/predictive biomarkers and novel drug therapies, contributing to international initiatives like iCHOM for patient-centered outcomes.
Scientific accolades include the Francqui Research Professor title, Leopoldina Academy membership, and recognition as a Thomson Reuters Highly Cited Researcher. She led pivotal clinical trials and secured an ERC Advanced Grant (2016-2022), alongside multiple early-career awards.
