Vera Faber is an Associate Professor in Border Studies at the Arctic University of Norway (UiT) and a Marie Curie Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oslo (UiO). She holds a PhD in Ukrainian Literature from the University of Vienna (2017) and master’s degrees in Russian Literature and Design. Her research focuses on Soviet Ukrainian and Russian avant-garde movements, border aesthetics, intermediality, and the intersection of art and politics. She leads the Soviet Ellipses project, exploring conscious omission as a creative tool to challenge political constraints.
Her academic background includes teaching positions at the University of Zagreb, New Design University Sankt Pölten, and the University of Kyiv. She has authored monographs such as Die ukrainische Avantgarde zwischen Ost und West (2019) and co-edited volumes on avant-garde studies and border aesthetics. Awards include the Marie Curie Fellowship and the Doc.Award for Best Dissertation.
Key research interests include Soviet Ukrainian literature, intertextuality, border semiotics, and photography’s role in resisting censorship. Her work bridges literary analysis, art history, and cultural studies, with a focus on transgressive artistic practices in constrained socio-political contexts.
Recent lectures and publications address topics like Ukrainian nonconformist photography, Crimea in cultural discourse, and avant-garde networks in Odessa. Her research groups include Border Readings and Migration, Borders, and Identity at UiO.
