Boris Groys is a globally renowned philosopher, art critic, and media theorist holding the position of Global Distinguished Professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at New York University (NYU) and Senior Research Fellow at the Staatliche Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe. He has held roles at institutions such as the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Southern California, and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. Groys specializes in Soviet-era art, Russian avant-garde, and the intersection of aesthetics with politics, particularly through the lens of French poststructuralism and modern Russian philosophy.
His academic journey began at Leningrad State University (now Saint Petersburg State University), where he studied philosophy, mathematics, and logic. He later earned a doctorate in philosophy from Universität Münster. Groys is best known for works like The Total Art of Stalinism (1992), which redefined understandings of Soviet aesthetics and politics. His research explores how avant-garde movements interacted with Soviet state ideology and post-Stalinist cultural shifts.
Groys has curated influential exhibitions, including Fluchtpunkt Moskau and Privatizations, and has authored over 30 books. His theoretical contributions bridge philosophy, media studies, and art criticism, emphasizing art as a societal symptom. Recent works include explorations of digital media’s role in contemporary culture and antiphilosophical thought.
