Vera Balmer is a Research Assistant and Doctoral Student at the Institute of Structural Engineering, ETH Zurich, specializing in Concrete Structures and Bridge Design. She holds an MSc in Civil Engineering from ETH Zurich with a focus on Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering, including an exchange semester at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Her research interests revolve around innovative structural design methodologies, including AI-driven generative design, sustainability metrics integration, and advanced analysis of reinforced concrete components. She explores topics such as pedestrian bridge optimization using conditional variational autoencoders, nonlinear analysis of concrete beams via physics-informed neural networks, and circular economy principles in bridge design.
Key recognitions include the Culmann Award (2022). Her work bridges computational innovation with traditional structural engineering, addressing both technical and environmental challenges in civil infrastructure. She has contributed to industry through internships at Bänziger Partner (bridge engineering) and Basler & Hofmann (geotechnical engineering).
