The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houstonمعرفی
Dr. Venugopal Venna serves as Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology at McGovern Medical School, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. His research integrates cerebrovascular biology, behavioral neuroscience, and gut-brain axis mechanisms within the BRAINS Research Laboratory infrastructure.
Dr. Venna's research interests focus on three interconnected domains: ischemic stroke pathophysiology, post-stroke depression mechanisms, and gut-brain communication in recovery. His lab develops translationally relevant rodent models that specifically address aging populations and sex differences, with current flagship projects examining macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) signaling in post-stroke depression and microbiome-derived metabolites in functional recovery.
His publication record shows consistent high-impact output in journals like Circulation Research, Nature Communications, and Stroke, with recent work emphasizing gut microbiome interactions in stroke recovery. The research trajectory demonstrates increasing sophistication in molecular techniques and translational applications.
- American Heart Association Young Investigator Travel Award
- Founders Affiliate Grants from American Heart Association
- French Pharmacological Society Fellowship Award
- Current Scientist Development Grant from American Heart Association
Dr. Venna maintains active mentorship of graduate students and research assistants through the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. His lab receives primary funding through competitive AHA grants with infrastructure support from UTHealth Houston's core facilities. The BRAINS Laboratory operates six specialized research cores enabling comprehensive stroke investigation from molecular to behavioral levels.
The laboratory maintains strong clinical connections through UTHealth Houston's stroke program, facilitating rapid translation of basic findings to patient care. Current collaborations span microbiome analysis, neuroimmunology, and vascular biology with multiple institutions.
