Venkatesan Venkata Krishnan

Dr. Venkatesan Venkata Krishnan is a Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at Teesside University's SCEDT Engineering. He holds a PhD from the University of Connecticut (1996) and a BEng from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT-D, 1988). His career spans academic roles at IIT Delhi (2004–2010) and industry experience at ExxonMobil and Bloom Energy. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2019).

Research Interests:

• High-temperature electrochemistry (SOFCs/SOECs)
• Alkaline seawater electrolysis for green hydrogen
• Catalysis for hydrogen production and utilization
• CO₂ mitigation via novel electrochemical systems

Recent Projects: Includes £30K–£50K EPSRC-funded work on seawater electrolysis (2023–24), a £40K study on hydrogen reduction of iron ore (2022), and a £289K Innovate UK KTP project with Binding Solutions Ltd. (2024–2027).

Awards:

• Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2019)

Grants & Collaboration: PI on Research England-funded seawater electrolysis projects (2024–), co-I on BEIS-funded hydrogen direct reduction of iron (2022), and collaborations with Durham University, SMEs like Micropore and Torvex, and industrial partners such as TWI and C-Tech.

Labs & Teams: Leads research groups focused on electrochemical systems, catalysis, and sustainable energy technologies at Teesside University’s Center for Sustainable Engineering.
