Vania Smith Allen is a Full Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Notre Dame, serving as Director of the Program in Health, Humanities, & Society and holding Faculty Fellow appointments at the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies and Eck Institute for Global Health.
Education:
- B.A. in Anthropology and Biology from Lawrence University (1998)
- M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Florida (2001)
- Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Illinois-Chicago (2006)
Her groundbreaking research examines how medical, economic, and development institutions impact marginalized populations—particularly women—through ethnographic studies in Mexico, Kenya, and India. Key contributions include two major monographs: Shaping the Motherhood of Indigenous Mexico (Vanderbilt University Press, 2013) on reproductive lives of indigenous women, and Becoming Gods: Medical Training in Mexican Obstetric Wards (Rutgers University Press, 2021) analyzing obstetric violence transmission. Current projects investigate cesarean decision-making (Incision Decisions), medical space design impacts (Hospital Spaces), and cross-societal prevalence of obstetric violence (Cutting Women).
