Carolyn Sufrin, MD, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and holds an appointment in Health, Behavior, and Society at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her clinical expertise includes family planning and general obstetrics, with a focus on reproductive health for incarcerated women. She earned an MD from Johns Hopkins, a PhD in medical anthropology from UCSF, and completed residency and a family planning fellowship in Pittsburgh and San Francisco.
Her research examines the intersection of reproductive justice, healthcare, and mass incarceration. She authored Jailcare: Finding the Safety Net for Women Behind Bars, based on ethnographic work in San Francisco County Jail. She directs the Advocacy and Research on Reproductive Wellness in Incarcerated People (ARRWIP) program, advancing NIH-funded studies on pregnancy outcomes, medication-assisted treatment, and contraceptive access in carceral settings.
Dr. Sufrin’s honors include the Edison T. Uno Chancellor Award and the Eileen Basker Memorial Prize. She serves on the National Commission on Correctional Health Care board and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
