Vanessa Ogle is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at Yale University. She is currently on leave for Spring 2025. Her research focuses on global Europe from the 18th century to the present, with expertise in economic history, the history of capitalism, and comparative empires. Her first major work, The Global Transformation of Time: 1870-1950, examines how timekeeping systems reflected globalization and imperial interactions. Her current project, Archipelago Capitalism: A History of the Offshore World, traces the rise of offshore financial systems and their role in shaping global inequality.
Her research employs a multi-archival approach, drawing on materials from over 30 locations including national archives, central banks, and multilateral institutions. Notable publications include articles in American Historical Review and Past & Present, analyzing tax havens, decolonization, and the political economy of neoliberalism. She teaches courses on modern European history, global capitalism, and comparative empires.
Her thematic research interests span economic infrastructure, legal frameworks of capitalism, and the intersection of empire and global systems. Ogle’s work bridges European and non-European histories, emphasizing transnational networks and their lasting impacts on contemporary economic structures.
