Vanessa Gruben is a Professor in the Common Law Section of the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. She is a recognized expert in Canadian health law and policy, focusing on legal and ethical issues in healthcare, including assisted reproduction, harm reduction, organ donation, and healthcare professional self-regulation.
Education:
- BScH in Life Sciences from Queen’s University
- LLB from the University of Ottawa
- LLM from Columbia University
Her scholarship has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Canadian Blood Services, and the Foundation for Legal Research. She is the co-editor of the 5th edition of Canada’s leading health law text, Canadian Health Law and Policy (LexisNexis, 2017), and co-author of Families and the Law in Canada: Cases and Commentary (Captus, 2019).
Professor Gruben serves as Director of the University of Ottawa Centre for Health Law, Policy and Ethics (CHLPE), a role she assumed in 2024. She also holds board positions with the Canadian Health Coalition and AMS Healthcare, and has appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada on behalf of Amnesty International Canada in landmark cases.
