Vanessa Brown is a Senior Lecturer at the Nottingham School of Art & Design, Nottingham Trent University, within the Department of Fashion, Knit and Textiles. She leads the MA Culture, Style and Fashion program and is part of the Design, Culture, and Context team. Her research focuses on visual/material culture, particularly the cultural significance of fashion, style, and objects, with a specialization in 'coolness' and its intersections with sustainability and identity.
Education:
- First-class honors degree in Printed Textiles
- MA in Cultural Studies (funded by British Academy), University of Leeds
- PhD awarded 2010, later published as Cool Shades: The History and Meaning of Sunglasses (Bloomsbury, 2015)
Research & Publications: Her work explores how visual/material style narrates identity, corporate branding, and cultural politics. Recent projects include re-evaluating 'cool studies' in modern contexts and collaborating across disciplines. She has published in academic books and written a children’s book and cultural journalism pieces.
Awards:
- British Academy award for MA studies
Teaching & Leadership: Innovated contextual studies programs, including the Visual & Material Delights Symposium (since 2007). Currently mentors two PhD students researching 1920s-30s swimsuit culture and fast-fashion/sustainability linkages.
External Engagement: Course examiner for University of Bolton and London College of Communication, speaker at MIDO (Milan), contributor to The Conversation, and frequent cultural radio guest.
