Vanessa Beesley serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at the University of Queensland, with extensive research contributions spanning cancer psychology, supportive care needs assessment, and Indigenous health disparities. Her work bridges clinical psychology with oncology, focusing particularly on gynecological cancers and patient-reported outcomes.
Her research program centers on understanding and addressing the psychological and supportive care needs of cancer patients and their caregivers, with particular emphasis on ovarian and pancreatic cancers. Beesley's work explores trajectories of symptom burden, quality of life impacts, and the effectiveness of interventions including exercise programs during chemotherapy. She has pioneered culturally responsive approaches to Indigenous cancer care and has recently expanded into psychedelic-assisted therapy research for cancer-related bereavement.
Analysis of her 15 most recent publications reveals a strong focus on patient-centered outcomes across multiple cancer types, with increasing attention to cultural responsiveness in clinical trials, community co-design of research, and innovative therapeutic approaches. Her work consistently addresses unmet supportive care needs across diverse populations, with methodological strengths in longitudinal designs and mixed-methods approaches.
Beesley has established significant collaborations through the OPAL Study Group and other research consortia, contributing to large-scale investigations of cancer survivorship. Her work demonstrates consistent funding support for population-based studies examining quality of life, symptom management, and supportive care interventions across the cancer trajectory.
Her research extends to multiple laboratory and clinical settings through collaborations with Queensland-based cancer centers, with particular emphasis on community-engaged research approaches that incorporate patient and caregiver perspectives directly into study design and implementation.
