Valērija Groma is an Associate Professor at the Rīgas Stradiņš University (RSU), Faculty of Medicine, Department of Morphology. She holds leadership roles as Manager of the Interdepartmental Electron Microscopy Laboratory and Head of the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy. Her academic journey includes a Medical Doctor degree from Riga Medical Institute (1981), a Candidate of Medical Sciences (1992), and a Habilitation Doctorate (1998). She specializes in histology, electron microscopy, and pathology, with a focus on cellular and molecular mechanisms in diseases such as autoimmune disorders, oncology, and viral infections.
Her research spans over 30 years, covering areas like cytoskeleton dynamics in disease, neurotrophins in non-neuronal tissues, and viral contributions to autoimmune conditions. She has supervised numerous PhD candidates and led projects funded by Latvian and international grants, including studies on HHV-6 in encephalopathy and parvovirus B19 in valve pathology.
Dr. Groma has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and a textbook on cell biology. Her awards include the 2016 'Scientific Laboratory' award and recognition for organizing the 'Scientists Night' event. She actively contributes to academic committees, editorial boards, and international conferences, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches in morphology and diagnostic electron microscopy.
