Valerie Weinstein is an Assistant Professor of German Studies and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Cincinnati's College of Arts and Sciences since 2012. She holds a PhD in German Studies from Cornell University (2000), an MA from Cornell (1997), and a B.A. magna cum laude in Germanic Languages from Harvard (1993). Her research focuses on intersections of gender, Jewish identity, and political ideology in German cinema from Weimar to Nazi eras, with notable works including Antisemitism in Film Comedy in Nazi Germany (2019) and Rethinking Jewishness in Weimar Cinema (2021).
She has held prior faculty positions at University of Nevada (2000-2012), Tulane (2011-2012), and Williams College (2000-2001). Her grants include Taft Research Center Fellowships and University Research Council funding. She regularly presents at international conferences like German Studies Association, exploring topics such as Nazi film propaganda, transnational cinema, and gender representation.
Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in feminist theory, Nazi cinema, and German cultural studies. She serves on UC's Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies committees and previously directed Gender, Race, and Identity Studies at University of Nevada.
