Valerie S. Reynolds is a faculty member in the Department of Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She holds a BS in Geology from UNC Wilmington, and earned her Master’s and PhD in Geology from the University of Tennessee. Her research focuses on planetary geology, igneous petrology, and geochemistry of extraterrestrial materials like Martian meteorites and asteroidal rocks. She has taught at institutions including Colby College and The University of the South before joining UNC Charlotte in 2012.
Dr. Reynolds teaches courses such as Mineral Resources and Sustainability, Mineralogy, and Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology. She serves as an undergraduate coordinator for Geology and Earth & Environmental Sciences degrees, emphasizing academic advising and student mentorship. Her career path reflects a blend of academic research, environmental consulting, and museum work at the Smithsonian.
Her research interests emphasize planetary materials and their formation processes, with a focus on linking Earth’s geology to extraterrestrial contexts. She actively engages in departmental leadership, including advising the GEO Club.
