Valerie Allen is a Professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY. She holds a position in the Department of English and has taught courses including ENG 260, ENG 201, and MAT 106. Her academic background includes education at Trinity College, Dublin, followed by teaching roles at University College Dublin, the University of Stirling, and the University of South Florida before joining John Jay in 1999.
Her research focuses on medieval literature, intellectual history, and the intersection of mathematics, theology, and poetics. Notable works include Roadworks: Medieval Britain, medieval roads (2016), L'Art d'enseigner de Martin Heidegger (2007), and On Farting: Language and Laughter in the Middle Ages (2010). She is affiliated with the New Chaucer Society and the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics.
Her recent scholarship explores the relationship between mathematical concepts and literary forms, as seen in articles like To Measure is to Feel: The Mathematics of English Metric Relics (2022) and Literature: Mathematics:: Tenor: Vehicle (2019).
