Valentina Maggini serves as Research Manager at the Department of Legal Sciences, University of Florence, where she is currently working on the 2023-2027 Excellence Project. With over 25 years of academic research experience, her career spans multiple disciplines including pharmacology, botany, and phytotherapy.
Dr. Maggini's research interests focus on pharmacovigilance, medicinal plant safety, antimicrobial compounds, and the interaction between plant microbiota and human health. Her work bridges traditional botanical knowledge with modern pharmacological research, particularly examining the safety profiles of herbal medicines and dietary supplements. She has made significant contributions to understanding the pharmacogenetics of pain management in pediatric cancer patients through her leadership of the STOP Pain project.
Her publication record demonstrates consistent contributions across multiple fields including phytochemistry, microbiology, pharmacovigilance, and clinical research. The articles show a clear trajectory toward increasingly sophisticated analyses of herbal medicine safety, plant-microbe interactions, and pharmacogenetic factors in treatment response. Recent work has focused on systematic reviews and meta-analyses that provide evidence-based evaluations of herbal medicine safety.
- Three-year research project from the Italian Association for Cancer Research (AIRC) for the STOP Pain project on pharmacogenetics of pediatric cancer pain
- National Scientific Qualifications (ASN) as Associate Professor in Botany and Pharmacology and Toxicology
- Specialist training period at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC, WHO, Lyon, France)
Dr. Maggini has held multiple research positions including responsibility for research at the Center for Research and Innovation in Phytotherapy and Integrative Medicine (CERFIT), visiting researcher positions, and research fellowships across multiple departments at the University of Florence and University of Pisa. Her interdisciplinary approach connects legal frameworks for medicinal plants with their scientific evaluation, making significant contributions to evidence-based phytotherapy.
