Valentina Giordano is a Lecturer (Teaching) in Urban Design at University College London's Bartlett School of Planning, where she also manages the Place Alliance, a cross-sector collaborative alliance for place quality chaired by Professor Matthew Carmona. With over 20 years of UK experience, her career spans professional consultancy in urban design and streetscape intervention, academic research in design governance, and teaching in urban design.
Her educational background includes:
- Master of Science from University College London (2003)
- Diploma from University College London (2002)
- Bachelor of Science from University College London (2001)
Giordano's research focuses on design governance in the built environment, examining how design policies and guidance deliver quality at local and national levels. Her work spans design coding, residential development processes, place quality measurement, public space design, London's streetscapes, and design governance frameworks. She brings her professional experience as a Chartered Member of the Royal Town Planning Institute and an Urban Design Group Recognised Practitioner to her academic work.
Her recent publications reveal consistent attention to practical applications of urban design principles, particularly in housing quality, design governance, and pandemic impacts on residential environments. The research demonstrates how design policies translate into built outcomes and how quality can be measured and improved across different contexts.
Her professional recognition includes:
- Sir Peter Hall Award for Wider Engagement Prize (2017)
- Impact Growth funding (2018)
As an educator, Giordano has taught across numerous urban design modules for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Since 2022, she has overseen graphic skills teaching across all programs and serves as the Departmental Careers Liaison Tutor. She coordinates the Design and Real Estate module and previously curated the Bartlett School of Planning Expo from 2014-2020.
Giordano actively manages the Place Alliance and has led significant research projects including the National Model Design Code Pilot Programme monitoring, the National Housing Design Audit, and studies on design review systems in London. Her work bridges academic research with practical application in urban design governance.
