James White is a Professor of Planning and Urban Design at the University of Glasgow, leading the Place theme at the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence. He holds roles including Subject Group Co-Lead for Place and Built Environment, Deputy Director of the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence, and Chair of the Royal Town Planning Institute’s Newcastle Partnership Board. His research focuses on urban design governance, sustainable development, high-rise residential planning, and retrofitting strategies for net-zero goals. He teaches urban design and planning for sustainability to postgraduate students.

Research interests include tools for shaping urban environments, housing design quality, high-rise density impacts, and retail space adaptation. He leads the ESRC-funded URBAN RETROFIT project and contributed to the REPAIR project on retail innovation. Awards include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and Chartered Town Planner status. Key publications include Condoland: The Planning, Design, and Development of Toronto's CityPlace (2023) and numerous journal articles on urban governance and design.
Grants: Current leadership includes a £1.5M ESRC grant for URBAN RETROFIT (2024–2027). Past grants include £6M for the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (2017–2022).
Teaching: Courses include Designing Places, Urban Design Policy, and Sustainable Housing Development.
