Valentin Schatz

Prof. Valentin Schatz is an Assistant Professor of Public Law and European Law with a Focus on Sustainability at Leuphana University of Lüneburg, affiliated with the School of Sustainability and the Institute of Sustainability Governance (INSUGO). He holds additional roles as an associate member of Leuphana Law School and the Leuphana Center for European and International Law (CEIL). His research emphasizes international, European, and domestic environmental law, with a particular focus on the law of the sea, sustainable fisheries, and maritime governance.

Education and Career: Schatz earned his doctoral degree (Dr. iur.) from the University of Hamburg in 2021 (summa cum laude) and served as a Legal Clerk at the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court (2020–2022). He held postdoctoral positions at the University of Hamburg and University of Trier, and conducted visiting research at the University of Adelaide and the Max Planck Institute Luxembourg. His academic journey includes studies at the University of Passau (2010–2016) and an ERASMUS Programme at the University of Dundee.

Research and Projects: His work prioritizes knowledge transfer, advising NGOs, governments, and think tanks on issues like marine environmental law, sustainable fisheries, and hybrid maritime threats. He leads the IMAPP project (2024–2027), focusing on balancing conservation and economic interests in Atlantic protection areas. His research spans fisheries management, RFMOs, and legal frameworks for maritime safety.

Awards and Recognition: Recipient of the Promotionspreis 2020-2022 (2023) for academic excellence. Active in professional networks, including the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law, the International Foundation for the Law of the Sea (IFLOS), and the International Law Association (ILA).

Teaching and Mentorship: Supervises students such as Tim Langerbeck and contributes to courses through Leuphana’s myStudy portal. His teaching integrates legal theory with practical challenges in sustainability governance.
