Valentin Clavé-Mercier

Valentin Clavé-Mercier is a Juan de la Cierva Postdoctoral Researcher at the School of Political Science and Sociology of Complutense University of Madrid. He holds an Associate Researcher role at the Complutense Institute for International Studies (ICEI) and serves on the executive committee of IPSA Research Committee 53 ‘Indigenous Politics’. Previously, he was a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow for the H2020 ‘POLITICO’ project (2018-2022) and a Postdoctoral Researcher for ‘JUSTNORTH’ (2022-2023). He completed his PhD in Politics & International Relations at the University of Aberdeen as part of CISRUL.

His research focuses on

• Critical political theory
• Postcolonial and decolonial studies
• Decolonization processes
• Political authority and sovereignty

These interests are reflected in publications in journals like Ethnopolitics, Review of International Studies, and International Theory, as well as co-editing Decolonising Political Concepts (Routledge, 2023).

He has held visiting research positions at the University of Auckland and La Trobe University. His work is supported by grants including the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme and the Juan de la Cierva fellowship.
