Dr Val Aston is a Lecturer in Law at the Hillary Rodham Clinton School of Law, Swansea University. She previously served at the University of East Anglia before joining Swansea. Her research focuses on the intersection of policing, protest law, and state surveillance, particularly how surveillance practices impact protest rights and legal frameworks. She teaches Criminal Law and Human Rights Law, emphasizing critical analysis of police powers and their societal implications.
Research interests include the legal basis of overt state surveillance, the chilling effects of police monitoring on protest mobilization, and the balance between public order and civil liberties. Her doctoral thesis explored these themes extensively. Dr Aston holds a Basic Welsh Speaker certification and is based at the Richard Price Building, Singleton Campus.
